This is my covenant with you and your descendants after you, the covenant you are to keep: Every male among you shall be circumcised. You are to undergo circumcision, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and you. Genesis 17:10-11
Some men came down from Judea to Antioch and were teaching the brothers: “Unless you are circumcised, according to the custom taught by Moses, you cannot be saved. This brought Paul and Barnabus into sharp dispute and debate with them. So Paul and Barnabus were appointed, along with some other believers, to go up to Jerusalem too see the apostles and elders about this question. Acts 15:1-2
Now then, why do you try to test God by putting on the necks of the disciples a yoke that neither we nor our fathers have been able to bear? No! We believe it is through the grace of our Lord Jesus that we are saved, just as they are. Acts 15:10-11
Christ is for Everyone
He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. 2 Peter 3:9
Relationships Require Sacrifice
It is my judgment, therefore, that we should not make it difficult for the Gentiles who are turning to God. Instead we should write to them, telling them to abstain from food polluted by idols, from sexual immorality, from the meat of strangled animals and from blood. Acts 15:19-20
What did they sacrifice for community?
1. Gave up tradition
- When it becomes more important than the people around us.
2. Gave up identity
- When it becomes irrelevant to those we’re trying to reach.
