The first of two messages from the “Game Changers” sermon series.  This message was on learning to be a loving person.

“Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God. Anyone who loves is a child of God and knows God. But anyone who does not love does not know God, for God is love … And He has given us this command: Those who love God must also love their Christian brothers and sisters.”  1 John 4:7-8, 21

WHAT IS LOVE?

  • LOVE IS A MATTER OF CHOICE

“Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony.”  Colossians 3:14

  • LOVE IS A MATTER OF CONDUCT

“Dear children, let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions.”  1 John 3:18

HOW TO LOVE SOMEONE YOU DON’T LIKE

BY EXPERIENCING GOD’S LOVE YOURSELF

“Then Christ will make His home in your hearts as you trust in Him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep His love is.”  Ephesians 3:17-18

“And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.”  Romans 8:38-39

“We love each other because He loved us first.”  1 John 4:19

BECOME A FORGIVING PERSON

“Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others.”  Colossians 3:13

BE AWARE OF JESUS’ EXAMPLE

“Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too. You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.”  Philippians 2:4-5

BEGIN WITH LOVING ACTION

“But to you who are willing to listen, I say, love your enemies! Do good to those who hate you. Bless those who curse you. Pray for those who hurt you.”  Luke 6:27-28

“Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged.  It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance. Prophecy and speaking in unknown languages and special knowledge will become useless. But love will last forever!”   1 Corinthians 13:4-8

BELIEVE IN THEIR BEST

“Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.”  1 Corinthians 13:7

HOW TO REKINDLE A LOST LOVE

“But I have this complaint against you. You don’t love me or each other as you did at first! Look how far you have fallen! Turn back to me and do the works you did at first. If you don’t repent, I will come and remove your lampstand from its place among the churches.”  Revelation 2:4-5
