Fourth Sunday of IMMERSE – A message by Pastor Todd on How To Study a Bible Passage.
HOW TO STUDY A BIBLE PASSAGE
THREE QUESTIONS TO ASK IN BIBLE STUDY
QUESTION # 1 – WHAT? – THE PRINCIPLE OF OBSERVATION
QUESTION # 2 – SO WHAT? – THE PRINCIPLE OF INTERPRETATION
QUESTION # 3 – NOW WHAT? – THE PRINCIPLE OF APPLICATION
2 Timothy 3:16-17 All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.
Philippians 2:19-30 If the Lord Jesus is willing, I hope to send Timothy to you soon for a visit. Then he can cheer me up by telling me how you are getting along. I have no one else like Timothy, who genuinely cares about your welfare. All the others care only for themselves and not for what matters to Jesus Christ. But you know how Timothy has proved himself. Like a son with his father, he has served with me in preaching the Good News. I hope to send him to you just as soon as I find out what is going to happen to me here. And I have confidence from the Lord that I myself will come to see you soon. Meanwhile, I thought I should send Epaphroditus back to you. He is a true brother, co-worker, and fellow soldier. And he was your messenger to help me in my need. I am sending him because he has been longing to see you, and he was very distressed that you heard he was ill. And he certainly was ill; in fact, he almost died. But God had mercy on him—and also on me, so that I would not have one sorrow after another. So I am all the more anxious to send him back to you, for I know you will be glad to see him, and then I will not be so worried about you. Welcome him with Christian love and with great joy, and give him the honor that people like him deserve. For he risked his life for the work of Christ, and he was at the point of death while doing for me what you couldn’t do from far away.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE LIKE THESE TWO MEN?
Philippians 2:20 – “genuinely cares about your welfare”
Philippians 2:22 – “has proved himself”
Philippians 2:25 – “true brother, co-worker, and fellow soldier”
Philippians 2:26 – “longs for all of you and is distressed”
Philippians 2:30 – “risked his life for the work of Christ”
A FOLLOWER OF JESUS IS:
1. CARING
Philippians 2:21 All the others care only for themselves and not for what matters to Jesus Christ.
2. CONSISTENT
Philippians 2:22 But you know how Timothy has proved himself. Like a son with his father, he has served with me in reaching the Good News.
3. COOPERATIVE
Philippians 2:25 Meanwhile, I thought I should send Epaphroditus back to you. He is a true brother, co-worker, and fellow soldier. And he was your messenger to help me in my need.
4. CONSIDERATE
Philippians 2:26 I am sending him because he has been longing to see you, and he was very distressed that you heard he was ill.
5. COURAGEOUS
Philippians 2:30 For he risked his life for the work of Christ, and he was at the point of death while doing for me what you couldn’t do from far away.
Philippians 4:5 Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do.
James 1:22 But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise you are only fooling yourselves.
APPLICATION S.T.E.P.S.
Is there a Sin to confess?
Is there a Truth to obey?
Is there an Example to follow?
Is there a Promise to claim?
Is there Something to avoid?
