One of the most beloved verses n the Bible is Romans 8:28. It’s one of the greatest promises in the Bible. Typically we read the first half of the verse, but stop there: “And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God…” The rest of the verse says “…and are called according to His purpose for them.” Notice the words called and purpose. This verse says that calling and purpose go together. The key to living a better life is to know your calling.

KNOW YOUR CALLING

Sermon by Todd Lester, May 10, 2015

Romans 8:28 And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose for them.

Ephesians 1:18-19 I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can understand the confident hope He has given to those He called—His holy people who are His rich and glorious inheritance. I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe Him.

WHAT I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT MY LIFE’S CALLING

1. MY CALLING IS A GIFT FROM GOD

Galatians 1:6 God … called you to Himself through the loving mercy of Christ.

2 Timothy 1:9 For God saved us and called us to live a holy life. He did this, not because we deserved it, but because that was His plan from before the beginning of time—to show us His grace through Christ Jesus.

2. I AM CALLED FOR GOD’S PURPOSE

Romans 9:11-12 But before they were born, before they had done anything good or bad, she received a message from God … She was told, “Your older son will serve your younger son.”

Ephesians 2:10 For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago.

3. GOD CHOSE MY CALLING BEFORE I WAS BORN

Jeremiah 1:5 I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb. Before you were born I set you apart and appointed you as my prophet to the nations.

Galatians 1:15 But even before I was born, God chose me and called me by His marvelous grace.

4. MY SINS AND MISTAKES DON’T CHANGE MY CALL

1 Timothy 1:12-13 He considered me trustworthy and appointed me to serve Him, even though I used to blaspheme the name of Christ. In my insolence, I persecuted His people. But God had mercy on me because I did it in ignorance and unbelief.

5. MY CALLING IS PERMANENT

Romans 11:29 For God’s gifts and His call can never be withdrawn.

6. MY CALLING IS CONNECTED TO OTHERS

Ephesians 4:4 For there is one body and one Spirit, just as you have been called to one glorious hope for the future.

Hebrews 3:1 And so, dear brothers and sisters who belong to God and are partners with those called to heaven.

7. GOD EMPOWERS WHAT HE CALLS ME TO DO

Ephesians 4:1 Therefore I, a prisoner for serving the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of your calling, for you have been called by God.

2 Thessalonians 1:11 So we keep on praying for you, asking our God to enable you to live a life worthy of His call. May He give you the power to accomplish all the good things your faith prompts you to do.

1 Thessalonians 5:24 God will make this happen, for He who calls you is faithful.

8. THERE’S A PRIZE FOR LIVING OUT MY CALLING

Philippians 3:14 (NIV) I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

1 Thessalonians 2:12 We pleaded with you, encouraged you, and urged you to live your lives in a way that God would consider worthy. For He called you to share in His Kingdom and glory.
