The first thing that God calls us to do is just to be loved by God. That’s the foundation for this sermon series, Living A Better Story. The second calling is to belong to God’s church.

YOU ARE CALLED TO BELONG

Message by Todd Lester, May 17, 2015

Hebrews 2:10 God, for whom and through whom everything was made, chose to bring many children into glory.

Ephesians 1:5 God decided in advance to adopt us into His own family by bringing us to Himself through Jesus Christ.

1 Timothy 3:14-15 (NCV) Although I hope I can come to you soon, I am writing these things to you now. Then, even if I am delayed, you will know how to live in the family of God. That family is the church of the living God, the support and foundation of the truth.

Ephesians 2:19 So now you Gentiles are no longer strangers and foreigners. You are citizens along with all of God’s holy people. You are members of God’s family.

Romans 1:6 And you are included among those Gentiles who have been called to belong to Jesus Christ.

THE BENEFITS OF BELONGING

IN GOD’S FAMILY: I LEARN MY TRUE IDENTITY

Ephesians 2:19 So now you Gentiles are no longer strangers and foreigners. You are citizens along with all of God’s holy people. You are members of God’s family.

Hebrews 2:11 So now Jesus and the ones he makes holy have the same Father. That is why Jesus is not ashamed to call them his brothers and sisters.

1 Corinthians 3:16 Don’t you realize that all of you together are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God lives in you?

IN GOD’S TEMPLE: I AM SUPPORTED BY OTHERS

Ephesians 2:21-22 We are carefully joined together in Him, becoming a holy temple for the Lord. Through Him you Gentiles are also being made part of this dwelling where God lives by His Spirit.

Romans 1:12 When we get together, I want to encourage you in your faith, but I also want to be encouraged by yours.

1 Corinthians 12:27 All of you together are Christ’s body, and each of you is a part of it.

IN CHRIST’S BODY: I DISCOVER MY UNIQUE VALUE

Romans 12:4-5 Just as our bodies have many parts and each part has a special function, so it is with Christ’s body. We are many parts of one body, and we all belong to each other.

1 Corinthians 12:15-16 If the foot says, “I am not a part of the body because I am not a hand,” that does not make it any less a part of the body. And if the ear says, “I am not part of the body because I am not an eye,” would that make it any less a part of the body?

Psalm 100:3 He made us, and we are his. We are his people, the sheep of his pasture.

IN GOD’S FLOCK: I AM PROTECTED AND I AM CARED FOR

Galatians 6:2 Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ.

1 Thessalonians 5:11 So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing.

IN GOD’S GARDEN: MY LIFE BECOMES PRODUCTIVE

John 15:4-5 A branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me. Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.

Ephesians 3:21 Glory to him in the church and in Christ Jesus through all generations forever and ever!
