With the busyness of all our Christmas decorating, preparations and celebrations, have we forgotten the Guest of Honour? This week’s message addressed common reasons people miss Christmas, even when they’re surrounded by it.
First, we watched this video, a funny reminder that the baby born in the manger, is the same Jesus who ultimately died for our sins. He’s not just the reason for the season or the reason for cool bracelets. Jesus is worth celebrating all year.
A CHRISTMAS TRAGEDY
Message by Todd Lester – December 13, 2015
WHY PEOPLE MISS CHRISTMAS
1. BUSYNESS (The Innkeeper)
Luke 2:7 She gave birth to her first child, a son. She wrapped him snugly in strips of cloth and laid Him in a manger, because there was no lodging available for them.
2. FAMILIARITY (The Religious Leaders)
Matthew 2:4-5 [King Herod] called a meeting of the leading priests and teachers of religious law and asked, “Where is the Messiah supposed to be born?” “In Bethlehem in Judea,” they said…
Ephesians 4:18 Their minds are full of darkness; they wander far from the life God gives because they have closed their minds and hardened their hearts against Him.
3. FEAR (King Herod)
Matthew 2:3 King Herod was deeply disturbed when he heard this, as was everyone in Jerusalem.
HOW TO NOT MISS CHRIST THIS CHRISTMAS
1. STOP FILLING MY LIFE WITH LESS IMPORTANT THINGS
Psalm 39:6 We are merely moving shadows, and all our busy rushing ends in nothing. We heap up wealth, not knowing who will spend it.
Psalm 46:10 “Be still, and know that I am God!”
2. LOOK CLOSELY AT WHY JESUS CAME
Matthew 2:8 Then he told them, “Go to Bethlehem and search carefully for the child. And when you find him, come back and tell me so that I can go and worship him, too!”
Jeremiah 29:13 “If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me,” says the Lord.
3. LISTEN TO THE GOOD NEWS OF CHRISTMAS
Luke 2:10-11 …the angel reassured them. “Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people. The Saviour—yes, the Messiah, the Lord—has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of David!
John 10:10 The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.
John 3:17 God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.
2 Corinthians 6:2 For God says … “Indeed, the “right time” is now. Today is the day of salvation.
