The Bible says you must run the race to win the prize, but how do you do that? We’ve talked about that in this series, about the tools that God has given us so we can run the race to win. This week we finished this message series with the topic of fortitude.
THE AMAZING RACE
Message by Todd Lester – March 6, 2016
THE AMAZING POWER OF FORTITUDE
1 Corinthians 9:24 Don’t you realize that in a race everyone runs, but only one person gets the prize? So run to win!
Jeremiah 32:17 O Sovereign Lord! You made the heavens and earth by your strong hand and powerful arm. Nothing is too hard for you!
ACKNOWLEDGE THE SOURCE OF YOUR STRENGTH
Psalm 19:1-2 The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display his craftsmanship. Day after day they continue to speak; night after night they make him known.
Ephesians 1:19-20 I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe him. This is the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead.
PROBLEM #1: THE STRENGTH TO GET STARTED
Romans 7:18 And I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. I want to do what is right, but I can’t.
Philippians 2:13 For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.
PROBLEM #2: THE POWER TO KEEP GOING
Psalm 6:2-3 Have compassion on me, Lord, for I am weak. Heal me, Lord, for my bones are in agony. I am sick at heart. How long, O Lord, until you restore me?
Ecclesiastes 2:11 But as I looked at everything I had worked so hard to accomplish, it was all so meaningless—like chasing the wind. There was nothing really worthwhile anywhere.
Isaiah 40:28-31 Have you never heard? Have you never understood? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of all the earth. He never grows weak or weary. No one can measure the depths of his understanding. He gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless. Even youths will become weak and tired, and young men will fall in exhaustion. But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.
APPROPRIATE THE STEPS TO GAINING GOD’S STRENGTH
1. YOU ADMIT YOUR LACK OF STRENGTH
2 Corinthians 12:9-10 “My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me. That’s why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
2. YOU BELIEVE IN FAITH
Mark 9:23 “Anything is possible if a person believes.”
3. YOU SPEAK IN FAITH
2 Corinthians 4:13 But we continue to preach because we have the same kind of faith the psalmist had when he said, “I believed in God, so I spoke.”
4. YOU ACT IN FAITH
Joshua 3:13-17 … But as soon as the feet of the priests who were carrying the Ark touched the water at the river’s edge, the water above that point began backing up a great distance away … And the water below that point flowed on to the Dead Sea until the riverbed was dry.
