Life is a series of tests. This week we looked at the life of Abraham and the tests he went through in life.
There are four kinds of teachers of life: 1) interruptions; 2) inactivity; 3) inconveniences; 4) irritations.
EPIC FAIL: REAL FAITH
Message by Todd Lester – March 20, 2016
James 1:2-3, 12 Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow…God blesses those who patiently endure testing and temptation.
THE FOUR TESTS OF REAL FAITH
TEST #1: A MAJOR CHANGE
Hebrews 11:8 It was by faith that Abraham obeyed when God called him to leave home and go to another land that God would give him as his inheritance. He went without knowing where he was going.
For study: Genesis 12:1-7
Real faith is following God without knowing WHERE.
TEST #2: A DELAYED PROMISE
Hebrews 11:9-10 And even when he reached the land God promised him, he lived there by faith—for he was like a foreigner, living in tents. And so did Isaac and Jacob, who inherited the same promise…
For study: Genesis 13-14
Real faith is waiting for God’s timing without knowing WHEN.
TEST #3: AN IMPOSSIBLE PROBLEM
Hebrews 11:11-12 It was by faith that even Sarah was able to have a child, though she was barren and was too old. She believed that God would keep his promise. And so a whole nation came from this one man who was as good as dead.
For study: Genesis 17:15-22, 18:1-15, 21:1-6
Real faith is expecting a miracle without knowing HOW.
TEST #4: A SENSELESS TRAGEDY
Hebrews 11:17-18 It was by faith that Abraham offered Isaac as a sacrifice when God was testing him… even though God had told him, “Isaac is the son through whom your descendants will be counted…”
Hebrews 11:19 Abraham reasoned that if Isaac died, God was able to bring him back to life again. And in a sense, Abraham did receive his son back from the dead.
Hebrews 11:39-40 All these people earned a good reputation because of their faith, yet none of them received all that God had promised. For God had something better in mind for us, so that they would not reach perfection without us.
For study: Genesis 22:1-19
Real faith is trusting God’s purpose without knowing WHY.
