In this series, Relationology, we’ve been undergoing a study of relationships. This week’s message focused on an aspect of intimacy with God by considering God as a friend, teaching that the friendship was broken by sin and is restored through Jesus.

Message by Todd Lester – June 26, 2016

Romans 5:10-11 For since our friendship with God was restored by the death of his Son while we were still his enemies, we will certainly be saved through the life of his Son. So now we can rejoice in our wonderful new relationship with God because our Lord Jesus Christ has made us friends of God.

HOW TO BUILD A FRIENDSHIP WITH GOD

1. MAKE KNOWING GOD YOUR HIGHEST PRIORITY

Philippians 3:8 Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ …

Jeremiah 29:13 If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me.

2. MAKE TIME FOR THE FRIENDSHIP

Matthew 6:6 But when you pray, go away by yourself, shut the door behind you, and pray to your Father in private. Then your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.

3. DECIDE WHOSE FRIENDSHIP YOU WANT MOST

James 4:4 Don’t you realize that friendship with the world makes you an enemy of God? I say it again: If you want to be a friend of the world, you make yourself an enemy of God.

John 15:14 You are my friends if you do what I command.

4. KEEP THE COMMUNICATION OPEN

1 Thessalonians 5:17 Never stop praying.

5. TRUST GOD IN YOUR PAIN

Psalm 55:22 Give your burdens to the Lord, and he will take care of you. He will not permit the godly to slip and fall.

Psalm 91:14 The Lord says, “I will rescue those who love me. I will protect those who trust in my name.

Jeremiah 15:19 If you return to me, I will restore you so you can continue to serve me.

John 15:13-14 There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.

1 John 3:23 And this is his commandment: We must believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as he commanded us.
