We continue to explore, discover and examine the truths that give meaning and purpose to life, as stated in the Apostles’ Creed.  Adam Hamilton, author of “Creed,” believes that some powerful answers are contained in the Apostles’ Creed, an early statement of foundational Christian beliefs. This week Interim Pastor Bill Johnston spoke on the specific statement in the Creed, “I believe in the Holy Spirit.”

CREED: I BELIEVE IN THE HOLY SPIRIT

Message by Bill Johnston – March 11, 2018

“I believe in the Holy Spirit…”

THE HOLY SPIRIT’S IDENTITY

1. HE IS A PERSON

2. HE IS THE HOLY SPIRIT

3. HE IS REFERRED TO AS WIND

Acts 2:1-2 On the day of Pentecost all the believers were meeting together in one place. Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting.

4. HE IS REFERRED TO AS FIRE

Acts 2:3-4 Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.

THE HOLY SPIRIT’S ACTIVITY

1. HE HELPS

John 14:16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you.

2. HE GUIDES

John 14:17a He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth.

John 16:13a When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth…

3. HE INDWELLS

John 14:17-18 The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you. No, I will not abandon you as orphans—I will come to you.

a) HE IS AROUND US

b) HE IS IN US

4. HE SPEAKS

John 16:13b He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future.

1st) LIKE A MAGNETIC ATTRACTION

2nd) LIKE AN INTERNAL APPEAL

5. HE EMPOWERS

Acts 1:8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth

6. HE CONVICTS

John 16:7-8 But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate won’t come. If I do go away, then I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment.

7. HE PRODUCES FRUIT

Galatians 5:22-23 But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!

8. HE ENLIVENS

2 Corinthians 3:6 …the Spirit gives life

WHY DOES IT MATTER?

The One who writes the story of your life determines the ending.

THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

Amen.
