This was Pastor Bill Johnston’s final speaking Sunday at Westheights Church as he brought a message on gratitude. Embracing a heart of gratitude for God’s work in us, among us, and through us as a church; a thankful spirit and heart for the people around us, the ones we serve with, the ones we do life with.

We are grateful for Bill’s ministry at Westheights over the past year, helping us to thrive during a time of transition. His wisdom, sense of humour, kindness, and friendliness will be missed! May God bless Bill’s continued interim ministry at his next posting!

A GRATEFUL HEART

Message by Bill Johnston – October 7, 2018

Philippians 1:1-7a

Philippians 1:1 This letter is from Paul and Timothy, slaves of Christ Jesus. I am writing to all of God’s holy people in Philippi who belong to Christ Jesus, including the elders and deacons.

THE ANATOMY OF A GRATEFUL HEART

1. INTENTIONAL BLESSING

Philippians 1:2 May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and peace.

Chinese Proverb: “Those who drink the water must remember those who dug the well.”

2. SINCERE THOUGHTFULNESS

Philippians 1:3-4 Every time I think of you, I give thanks to my God. Whenever I pray, I make my requests for all of you with joy.

3. SHARED STORY

Philippians 1:5 For you have been my partners in spreading the Good News about Jesus Christ from the time you first heard it until now.

4. SETTLED CONFIDENCE

Philippians 1:6 And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.

5. LASTING MEMORY

Philippians 1:7a So it is right that I should feel as I so about all of you, for you have a special place in my heart.

TAKEAWAY

  • Someone has said that “The finest test of character is seen in the amount and power of gratitude we have.”
  • This Thanksgiving, take time to reflect on how you would rate your gratefulness (6 out of 10, for example), and come up with a list of at least 10 things, people, etc. that you are sincerely thankful for.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.
