“Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.” Matthew 5:5

READ

The dominating, aggressive, harsh and tyrannical people are sometimes those who control and dominate our world. This is something which would have been fully understood by a society under rule by yet another foreign nation, the Roman Empire. Jesus contrasts the abuse of power to those who are meek. Jesus flips worldly understanding upside down and claims that it will be those who are gentle, those who do not assert themselves over others in order to advance their own cause who will inherit the earth.

Jesus describes an individual who, while gentle in spirit, carries a strength of non-assertiveness to bring about God’s will in this world. Jesus was the ultimate example of this. He was incredibly gentle in spirit towards those around Him and He lived with a serving spirit and refused to accept the worldly power Satan offered Him. His example has served as our model for all those who follow him.
