“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because He has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.” Luke 4:18-19
READ
This is a passage which is loaded with incredible declaration. Good news for the poor, freedom for prisoners, sight to the blind, freedom for the oppressed, and the year of the Lord’s favour. This passage can be taken two ways. The first shows us the extraordinary way that God has accomplished these things through the life of His Son. Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross provides freedom and liberty and healing and empowerment to all who follow Him.
The second way this passage can be taken is as a calling. Our mission is ultimately the same as Christ’s. This was His mission, and as His followers it becomes ours too. And it is important to remember that Jesus starts with the line ‘the spirit of the Lord is upon me,’ because only with this power can we accomplish these things. To give good news to the poor, freedom to the imprisoned, sight to the blind, and freedom for the oppressed. This is our calling but we can only do it with God’s help.
