In the final message in our sermon series on the Seven Words From the Cross, Pastor Todd Lester spoke on Jesus’ proclamation of trust.
For our 40 days of Lent, our Sunday messages will focus on what Jesus said while He hung on the cross. You have probably thanked Jesus for what He did on the cross, but have you ever thanked Him for what He said on the cross?
SEVEN WORDS FROM THE CROSS
THE WORD OF TRUST
Luke 23:44-47 By this time it was about noon, and darkness fell across the whole land until three o’clock. The light from the sun was gone. And suddenly, the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn down the middle. Then Jesus shouted, “Father, I entrust my spirit into your hands!” And with those words He breathed His last. When the Roman officer overseeing the execution saw what had happened, he worshiped God and said, “Surely this man was innocent.”
1. MY FATHER IN HEAVEN LOVES ME
Psalm 103:13 The Lord is like a father to His children, tender and compassionate to those who fear Him.
2. MY FATHER CAN BE TRUSTED
Psalm 33:4 For the word of the Lord holds true, and we can trust everything He does.
2 Timothy 1:12 That is why I am suffering here in prison. But I am not ashamed of it, for I know the one in whom I trust, and I am sure that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him until the day of his return.
2 Timothy 2:13 If we are unfaithful, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny who He is.
3. MY FATHER IS DOING THINGS I CAN’T SEE
Job 23:9-10 I do not see Him in the north, for He is hidden. I look to the south, but He is concealed. “But He knows where I am going. And when He tests me, I will come out as pure as gold.”
2 Corinthians 4:17-18 For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever! So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.
4. MY FATHER CAN HANDLE ANYTHING I GIVE HIM
GOD’S HANDS ARE …
1. BIG ENOUGH TO BLESS ME
Psalm 139:5 You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head.
2. SCARRED TO NEVER FORGET ME
Isaiah 49:15-16 “Can a mother forget her nursing child? Can she feel no love for the child she has borne? But even if that were possible, I would not forget you! See, I have written your name on the palms of my hands.”
3. STRONG ENOUGH TO KEEP ME
John 10:28-29 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them away from me, for my Father has given them to me, and He is more powerful than anyone else. No one can snatch them from the Father’s hand.
2 Corinthians 1:8-9 We think you ought to know, dear brothers and sisters, about the trouble we went through in the province of Asia. We were crushed and overwhelmed beyond our ability to endure, and we thought we would never live through it. In fact, we expected to die. But as a result, we stopped relying on ourselves and learned to rely only on God, who raises the dead.
