Message by Karmyn Bokma – September 28, 2025

Philippians 2:6-11 (NIV)  Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

 

JESUS’ GLORY AS GOD (Philippians 2:6)

  • Jesus emptied Himself, and took on human form (verse 7)
  • Jesus’ humility (verses 7-8)
  • Jesus became obedient to death (verse 8)
  • Jesus’ exaltation (verse 9)
  • All humanity bows to Jesus (verse 10)
  • Jesus gives glory to God (verse 11)

 

Philippians 1:21 (NIV)  …to live is Christ and to die is gain.

Philippians 1:27 (NIV)  …conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ.

Philippians 3:7-8 (NIV)  But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ.

 

JESUS PLUS …

1. What are the things we are tempted to add to Jesus?

Matthew 6:19-21 (NIV)  Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

 

2. How are we orienting our lives to keep Jesus at the centre?

Philippians 4:8-9 (NIV)  Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.

 

Write down something for each of the following categories – think on such things …:

– noble

– right

– pure

– lovely

– admirable

– excellent

– praiseworthy

 

3. What are we giving our attention to?

Philippians 3:14 (NIV)  I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

 

4. How do I stand confidently with Jesus, regardless of my circumstances?
