Message by Josh Mutter – October 12, 2025

BIG IDEA: We will discover new options when we turn our focus off of ourselves and towards others.

Matthew 5:5 (NIV)  Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

– God blesses those who are humble … – New Living Translation

– How blissful the gentle … – Drew Bentley Hart

– Creator’s blessing rests on the ones who walk softly and in a humble manner. – The First Nations Version

1. Meekness is strength under control.

Matthew 11:29 (NIV)  Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle (praus) and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

Matthew 21:5 from Zechariah 9:9 (NIV)  Say to Daughter Zion, ‘See, your king comes to you, gentle (praus) and riding on a donkey.’

2. Meekness is God-centred, not self-centred.

Psalm 37:11 (NIV)  But the meek will inherit the land and enjoy peace and prosperity.

3. Meekness is expressed in concern for others.

Numbers 12:3 (NIV)  Now Moses was a very humble man, more humble than anyone else on the face of the earth.

Matthew 5:38-48 (NIV)  “You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you. “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

A CASE STUDY ON MEEKNESS

  • In a world of reactions, meekness refuses to mirror hostility.
  • Creative resistance exposes injustice through generosity.
  • The refusal to retaliate is a declaration of our trust in God.
  • The practice of meekness introduces others to the ways of the Kingdom.
