Message by Terry Wiens – October 26, 2025
Matthew 5:3-12 (NIV) Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
The Beatitudes are NOT:
- A checklist for perfect people
- A description of what we do
- A guilt trip list
They ARE:
- Who we are
- Who we aspire to be
- Who we are becoming
Significance is often found, not in the depth or complexity of something being said, but in the simple.
Righteousness is not about following a set of rules. It’s not about what we do, it’s about who we are.
The “right” righteous mindset can be defined by the following phrases:
- Right relationships
- Careful with anger
- Initiate peace
- Pay the price that’s not ours
- Avoid disloyal thoughts
- Stay loyal when it’s tough
- Don’t need to promise
- Help those who wrong us
- Love enemies
- Help anyone in need regardless if deserved
SUMMARY OF ANTIDOTES
- Mustard – We can all plant little mustard seeds
- Gifts – Pursue your passions and skills
- One Another – You are not alone – pursuing righteousness is done together
- Hammer – Sometimes following Jesus is about hard work and discipline
