Series Big Idea: Our values help us discern what faithfulness looks like as we follow Jesus together.

Matthew 16:6 (NIV)  Be careful…be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

Recap:

  • Core Value: Relying on God means recognizing that we cannot do this on our own
  • Core Value: Experiencing God’s love and grace means recognizing that we don’t have to do this on our own
  • Core Value: Believing the Bible
  • Core Value: Worshipping God

Four theological traditions that have shaped the BIC: 1) Anabaptist; 2) Pietist; 3) Wesleyan; 4) Evangelical

Core Value: Belonging to the Community of Faith – We value integrity in relationships and mutual accountability in an atmosphere of grace, love, and acceptance.

Anabaptists were convinced that the Christian was not capable of being a disciple by [themselves]; rather [they] needed the help and the understanding of others to walk the steep and narrow way of life. – Walter Klassen

Romans 12:5 (NIV)  …so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.

Matthew 18:20 (NIV)  For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.

Core Value: Pursuing Peace – We value all human life and promote forgiveness, understanding, reconciliation, and non-violent resolution of conflict.

Romans 5:1 (NIV)  Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

1 Peter 2:23 (NIV)  When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly.

Galatians 2:20 (NIV)  I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.

Concluding Thought:

As we practice together, we allow Jesus to reshape our instincts, our relationships, and ultimately the kind of people and community we are becoming.
