“The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” John 3:8

READ

In the Bible, the words for spirit and wind are closely related. In fact they are oftentimes synonymous. In the book of Genesis, when it says that the earth was void and ‘the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters,’ the word there for Spirit literally means ‘wind.’ This is the word play being alluded to in this verse.

The Spirit is present in our world and although we can’t see Him we know that He is there. We see the effects of the Spirit in the same way you can see the effects of the wind. You can block out the wind if you really wish to, but it will still remain waiting for you. You can harness incredible energy form the wind and the wind works to keep balance in the world. Jesus uses the wordplay of wind and the Spirit to describe the way that the Spirit operates. The Spirit works with His own motives and intentions. We should join with the Spirit as we see His moving in our world. God’s Spirit is always moving and working in people’s lives. We need to look for it and move with it as if it were the wind in the sails of our lives.
