Westheights Church Library review of the book “The New Tolerance” by authors Josh McDowell and Bob Hostetler. Reviewed by Meg Slater.

This is the second time I’ve read this book and it still gives me “shivers”!

The subtle and shrewd change in the meaning of tolerance is well laid out in this book

Quote:” The definition of new… tolerance is that every individual’s beliefs, values, lifestyle, and perception of truth claims are equal.  There is no hierarchy of truth. Your beliefs and my beliefs are equal, and all truth is relative.”..pg19.  There are examples plus how this belief system becomes counter to God’s original decrees and the Christian values and standards.

Read this book and have your eyes and ears open and then sit back and listen; read the newspaper, listen to the media, walk through a school yard and be amazed how your culture has changed!!

The authors do write how the church/Christians have responded in various ways: by just giving up, to blending and bending, to out and out conflict.  But the authors propose “The more excellent way”- Christ’s way of love to respond.

The reader—you—are given examples and more interpretation of how to portray this more excellent way in all arenas of life.

I am glad I reread this book and am again challenged to “reach out”,  to “aggressively live in love while humbly standing for truth, the imparting of the gospel” ..pg 205
