Drawing from Michael Frost’s book Surprise the World, this week’s message challenges us to learn Christ. How did you do with last week’s Habit – Listen? Don’t forget to keep practising the first three habits we’ve learned about: Bless, Eat, Listen.

“In the same way, the Church exists for nothing else but to draw [people] into Christ, to make them little Christs. If they are not doing that, all the cathedrals, clergy, missions, sermons, even the Bible itself, are simply a waste of time. God became Man for no other purpose. It is even doubtful, you know, whether the whole universe was created for any other purpose. It says in the Bible that the whole universe was made for Christ and that everything is to be gathered together in Him.” (C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity)

ENGAGING WITH PURPOSE

Message by Joshua Mutter – February 16, 2020

HABIT #4 – LEARN

“I will spend at least one period of the week learning Christ.”

Ephesians 4:20-24 NIV That, however, is not the way of life you learned when you heard about Christ and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus. You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

THE INCARNATION

Hebrews 1:3 NIV The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being …

Colossians 1:15 NIV The Son [Jesus] is the image of the invisible God …

John 1:18 NIV No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son … has made him known.

“When we want to know what Scripture says about a certain matter, we go first to the words, example and spirit of Jesus. We may go to other Scriptures for further background and understanding, but our primary guidance comes from Jesus. When we encounter difficult passages…we interpret them through the spirit and nature of Jesus by asking ‘What would Jesus say?’ or ‘How would Jesus handle this situation?'” (Palmer Becker, Anabaptist Essentials)
