Who is the Holy Spirit?

Message by Josh Mutter – June 12, 2022

How do you see God in your circumstances?

Big Idea: As we understand the Spirit, we understand how God is working in our circumstances.

The Holy Spirit is God

Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. – Genesis 1:2 NIV

Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land? Didn’t it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied just to human beings but to God.” – Acts 5:3-4 NIV

The Holy Spirit is God’s continuing presence with Jesus’ followers.

The Holy Spirit is a person not an “it”.

“If you love me, keep my commands. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—  the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. – John 14:15-17 NIV

The Holy Spirit is a relational being that connects with us on a relational level.

The Holy Spirit has their own personality.

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God. – Romans 8:26-27 NIV

… do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God… Ephesians 4:30 NIV

All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines. – 1 Corinthians 12:11 NIV

The Holy Spirit invests in us as individuals with the hopes that we reach our potential as participants in God’s life and mission.
