Summer ends in just four days, so the Westheights staff took a break from their busy day and compiled a list of last-minute things we’d like to do before Fall kicks in! Enjoy our suggestions, and feel free to Comment and add your own ideas!

  1. The Toronto Zoo is fabulous in the Fall! It’s not too hot, so the animals are out and moving…Catch the polar bears from underwater viewing–amazing!–and note that the pandas munch on their bamboo at 11am (and all day long) so park yourself in front of the viewing glass! Cool day? You’ll warm up in the tropical rainforest pavilions as you visit with hippos and orangutans.
  2. Treat yourself to a cool, exotic drink…Go for Bubble Tea, like you would on a warm, summer evening…(Where are some good places to get Bubble Tea? Try any of the following places:  Red Ginger,  Pho Ben Thanh, Sweet Dreams Teashop at the University Plaza)
  3. BBQ, BBQ, BBQ! Come rain or shine…Tired of burgers? How about quesadillas on the barbecue?
  4. We’ve got some great weather coming up next week!  Get in some bike rides, and then join a team for the Ride For Refuge!
  5. Speaking of great weather, what outdoor projects still need to get finished up?  I’m taking advantage of the weather and painting our shed.  The temperature is still warm enough!
  6. There are some great trails in our KW area.  Check out a section of the Walter Bean trail.  Head out on a Sunday afternoon for a family hike. Hike and walk… a lot. The colours are amazing and the temperature is very pleasant. And it’s tough to do when there’s 2 feet of snow on the ground.
  7. Pick your garden flowers and place them in a pretty vase, before the frost kills them!
  8. Clean out the garage! Donate, dump, and deal with the stuff that you won’t use for a few months.
  9. Have a Big BBQ before the snow hits.  Make classic cool weather foods like roast apples, ribs, etc.
  10. It’s not too late to introduce new plants into your garden. Take advantage of Fall plant sales and get planting!
  11. It is the last chance to have some Menchie’s frozen yogurt.  It is not as appealing in the winter months.
  12. Pick your own apples! Cider, apple pie, apple crisp anyone?
  13. The Westheights Men’s Retreat is a lot of fun in the fall. Fall is great for football and the men’s retreat is the last chance to play a game of football.
  14. Head to downtown Kitchener this weekend for two big outdoor events: Word on the Street Festival celebrating literacy, and KOI Music Festival including tasty food available at a mini food truck festival!
  15. Pack a picnic lunch and head over to Victoria Park, McLennan Park or Waterloo Park for a last outdoor party of the summer.
  16. Stretch out in the sun with a good book in your backyard. Enjoy lounging in the grass and appreciate that there’s no snow to shovel (yet!).
  17. Visit the farmer’s markets in either Kitchener or St. Jacobs and enjoy the outdoor components while they last.
  18. While it’s still warm outside, visit Doon Heritage Village and/or, if it’s rainy outside, the Museum. One admission price gives you access to both facilities!
  19. Pull out your stored-away scented candles, match them up with your favourite containers, and look forward to lighting them up again!
  20. Embrace the Fall! Drink hot apple cider, start baking with pumpkin, put up autumn decorations… Don’t fight it! 🙂
