THE FIFTH CANDLE OF ADVENT

(The Christ Candle)

The fifth candle represents Christ himself who is born to save people from their sins. It is a celebration of the fulfillment of prophecy as represented in Christ’s birth and hope in the final fulfillment when Christ comes again and Christians join him. (more…)

LOVE ALL  (Todd Lester)

A Christmas story that has always stuck with me is one from my life as a teenager.  It made a big impact on me and I still remember it so many years later. (more…)

LOVE ALL (Wilma Wigg)

I was nine when we arrived in Canada with my parents and 5 siblings. We attended a one room school, 4 of us almost doubling the enrolment to 9 children. We worshiped at a small community church where it seemed that everyone was related. Everything was strange and different. At first we didn’t understand a word of English. But this small rural settlement was a practical and loving farming community and they embraced us and taught us. (more…)

LOVE ALL  (Terry Kreutzkamp)

For most of our family’s Christmas journey, a central focus of our celebrations has been finding ways to give gifts to Jesus. While we give presents to family members on their birthdays it made sense (and got the focus off of ourselves) to give specific gifts to Jesus, not each other, when it was His birthday. Based on Matthew 25 we know that giving to Christ involves reaching out to the disadvantaged in tangible ways like feeding the hungry, clothing the poor, or visiting the imprisoned and sick. LOVE ALL (Sheree Winger)

Christmas has always been my favourite holiday.   There are so many traditions, get-togethers, and activities to enjoy.  As a child I was always the first one up Christmas morning.  I loved looking at the tree, in the dark, glowing with lights and full of presents underneath.  My sisters and I would sort the gifts into piles and try to figure out what was in the “big gift boxes”.  Afterwards we would try to be patient as my dad slowly dragged out the morning rituals before opening gifts. LOVE ALL  (Aldena Gerber)

Advent has always been a meaningful time for me.  A time to ‘prepare’ for Christmas and a time of sharing.  Ever since I was young my parents instilled in me the joy of sharing and giving.  “You can never out give the Lord” is still one of the phrases I often hear my parents say.   (more…)

THE FOURTH CANDLE OF ADVENT

(The Candle of Love)

The fourth candle is the candle of Love.  Jesus demonstrated self-giving love in his ministry.  Advent is a time for kindness, thinking of others, and sharing with others.  It is a time to love as God loved us by giving his most precious gift.  As God is love, let us be love also. (more…)

GIVE MORE (Mimi Lee)

A dear friend of ours went through a marital breakup a dozen years ago.  She decided to return to university full-time for a year in order to build a stronger financial foundation for her and her two children.  Obviously that year plus the ensuing years were tough times for her financially, but she was determined to continue to give Christmas gifts to our family, as a gesture of love. Ideas for Reimagining Christmas Part 3

This past Sunday, we received more ideas from the Westheights Church family on the topic of:  “What could we be doing differently this Christmas?”  Sharing these ideas helps inspire and encourage us as we strive together to make this Christmas more meaningful and worshipful. (more…)

I am thankful for the ways Christmas brings me together with family, friends and neighbours. When I look back at Christmases past I think of times shared with people more than gifts I received. (more…)

GIVE MORE (Marg Simpson)

Christmas was a wonderful, exciting time for me as a child. Gifts were a small part of our lives.  With six children in our family, it was difficult to provide the necessities, let alone extras. (more…)

GIVE MORE (David Wigg)

As long as I can remember, Christmas Eve has been a night of custom and tradition centered around family.  As a child, our family gathered by the fireplace to eat, hang stockings and open one gift.  As a teen, the Christmas Eve service became a special part of the evening before we returned home to the fire.  Later, my parents started hosting a pre-service dinner where family and close friends would gather to begin celebrating together.  There have always been changes, but the heart of it was always family. GIVE MORE (Dale Neuman)

Like a lot of men, the thought of gearing up for the Christmas season inevitably brings to mind the daunting task of getting gifts for everyone. The “I can’t think of what to get them” thought comes rushing to the forefront instead of “Yay! I have the opportunity to bless a lot of loved ones.” I’m not naturally a gift giver and the thought of thinking, deciding, planning, and seeking out gifts for multiple persons can seem overwhelming. Why is that? Why doesn’t the joy of the receiver make it all worthwhile? (more…)
