Project Serve 2012 Video Recap
0Thanks to more than 50 volunteers, 13 Forest Heights neighbours have beautified gardens! Our volunteers raked leaves, weeded, defeated a massive tree root, trimmed tree branches, weed-whacked overgrowth, installed gazebo covers, did minor repairs, tidied up garden beds, distributed mountains of dirt, gallantly saved an inch worm, mowed lawns, picked up garbage in a common area, and spread good cheer to our neighbours. Roy, one of our newer faces at Westheights Church, reconnected with a couple after 35 years when the home owner, Wayne, recognized Roy as the paper delivery boy – “Roy, Roy the Paper Boy.” This is just one of many stories of how we touched our community. Great work, Team Westheights! See the video below to relive the sweat of the day – Saturday, April 28, 2012. (more…)

Thanks from Forest Heights LTCC
0From the staff and residents of Forest Heights:
A big, big thank-you to all the children and youth and to Charlene and her team for the wonderful Christmas worship service you presented for the people of Forest Heights Long Term Care Centre. It is impossible for most of these people to go out to church and to children’s programs, so it means so much to us that you came to us! (more…)
FHLTCC Rehearsal Schedule and Event Details
1Rehearsals for our 5th Sunday of service leading at Forest Heights Long Term Care Centre are underway, and the SK-Grade 8′s are eagerly practising their parts. We’re nodding our heads in I-should-have-known wonder as we watch the kids sing, act, read, dance, play and write prayers and sermons–exploring their gifts and learning how to use them to worship and inspire!
Thank-you parents, and Westheights community, for your support and encouragement. It’s a flurry of activity that ends with the service we plan to lead on (more…)
WANTED: Hockey Equipment Needed
0The air is cooling and the days are getting shorter, but one of the best parts of the fall is the begining of the hockey season! The WSM Sr. High students are starting an exciting new community event. Starting in late September, Westheights will be hosting a weekly pick-up road hockey league for anyone 14+. To get us started we’re looking for anyone who has new or well-loved hockey equipment to donate. (more…)
Lessons From The Geese
0Someone sent me an email with a cool powerpoint show that included an interesting analogy about community. They wrote “This relates to what you are talking about at church during the CONNECT Forty Day Spiritual Adventure.”
The presentation begins with a slide that says, “We have a lot to learn from geese.” Each slide that follows provides information about the reasons that geese fly in a “V” formation and the lesson we can learn from it. (more…)
Getting Outside
0Connecting 101: a Recap
- Jesus has made his community to be the embodiment of love. (John 13:35)
- We experience that best via our relationships. (John 15:9-12)
Luke 10:1-2
We are meant to express that love to the world together.

Take The First Step
0I was thinking about Nel Slater’s words on Sunday. It was a great sermon. It got to the point of why community is challenging.
As I was thinking about it, I wondered if the first step, a courageous step in the process of connecting in community is (more…)
No Christian Individuals
2I book I was reading yesterday quoted an author who said, ‘There is no such thing as individual Christians.’ I found this a shocking statement, yet I really wasn’t that shocked by it. Basically the idea is that we really can’t have a ‘personal’ relationship with God. We talk about that idea a lot in Church. But really what he means is that (more…)
An Important Word
2In preparation for this series on community, I did a word study on fellowship. I learned something new. As you may already know, the word for “community” in the Bible is the word “fellowship.” Fellowship is what we are focusing on for our 40 Day Spiritual Adventure. The word “fellowship” in the Bible is the Greek word koinonia. Koinonia is an important word and it’s translated many different ways because, like a diamond that has multiple facets to it. In the Bible, koinonia is translated as not just “fellowship” but it’s translated as “community.” It’s translated as “participation.” Koinonia is translated as “contribution” and koinonia is translated as “generosity.” I find that last one very interesting and it was a new thought for me. It does not seem to belong with the word group in the way that I would have anticipated. (more…)
The Church and Community
0The church is God’s program. I believe in the local church and the mission that God has given to it for its local community and beyond. I have come to believe that one of the reasons that God created the church is that He knows that people do better when they are together supporting one another in their Christian faith. There are a lot of forces at work today to discourage you in your Christian life but one of the most powerful antidote to that discouragement is the body of Christ. Individualism has lead us to believe that we can do it alone. That is just not true. You can never be all that God wants you to be without (more…)
